10 Best Practices for Beating NYC Traffic

When it comes to working and traveling on Long Island and in the New York City metro area, it’s best to be prepared to hit some traffic. For many people in the tri-state area and beyond, traffic and commuting takes up a substantial amount of time. If you or fleet drivers drive in or around New York City (one of the most densely populated cities in the world), it’s easy to find yourself in bumper-to-bumper traffic. No matter where you’re headed, have a plan set in place to get you where you need to be as quickly and safely as possible.

 

Here are some of our tips:

  1. Make sure you tune in to a station with traffic updates. Try out local stations on AM radio.
  2. Avoid roads and areas with heavy construction.
  3. The toughest times to travel in and out of Manhattan are between 8-9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. If you can, try to avoid rush hour, or consider some alternate routes.
  4. Some of the roughest routes will take you to the Brooklyn Bridge, George Washington Bridge, or the Lincoln Tunnel. If you have no other options, make sure you schedule extra time just in case the traffic is bad.
  5. It’s easy to get aggravated and develop road rage when sitting in traffic for hours at a time. Remember: it’s easy to get into accidents when you’re angry.
  6. If you’re feeling tired, make sure you stop and pull over before continuing your commute.
  7. Keep your phone out of sight. Cell phones have become serious and deadly distractions. It’s better to not be tempted by the technology.
  8. Don’t slow down to look at an accident. Let the proper authorities handle the situation.
  9. Have a playlist ready to help you relax and unwind while commuting.
  10. The nice summer weather brings lots of different activities that can potentially back up traffic for miles. If you can, stay on top of traffic updates or check up on events happening in or around the metro area.
